The Hamburg Rothenbaum tournament is one of the world’s oldest and most traditional sporting tournaments
- Since 1892 it has been Germany’s biggest and most important tennis tournament
- In 1906 the venue switched from nearby Uhlenhorst to Rothenbaum
- In 1912 the Hamburg tournament was recognised as being on the same level as Grand Slam tournaments
- In 1956 the 50th International German Tennis Championship was held
- In 1969 the first prize money was paid out, heralding the start of tennis as a huge money-spinner.
- In 1997 the Center Court spectator capacity was increased to 13,200, and the retractable roof was introduced
- In 2006 the Rothenbaum tournament was held for the 100th time
- In 2007 the dream Federer-Nadal final went ahead: Federer won
- In 2008 a repeat of that dream final saw Nadal take victory.
- In 2009 Davydenko took his first Hamburg title
